The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in a devastating plunge in the number of cancer screenings in the U.S. during the past few years. A report anticipated a 30 percent rise in newly diagnosed cases of prostate cancer in 2021, due in part to men deferring their annual checkups because of the pandemic.
Prostate cancer can be silent — it’s important to get checked, even if men have no symptoms. 99% of patients with local or regional disease live 5 years or longer after diagnosis.
Catching prostate cancer early is the best way to keep you healthy. All men above age 55 and all Black men above age 45 should consider screening for prostate cancer. The American Urological Association (AUA) recommends shared decision-making to weigh the benefits and risks of screening, and decisions should be individualized for men below 55 who are at higher risk.
Most men have a baseline prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test at age 55. This test also includes a digital rectal exam (DRE), during which a doctor uses a gloved hand to feel for any enlargement or abnormal area of the prostate.
- Nearly 250,000 men were diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2021, and more than 34,100 men will die as a result. Leading physicians and researchers said 2022 and 2023 numbers may be even higher.
- A report also found that the incidence of prostate cancer is almost 80 percent higher in non-Hispanic Black men than in non-Hispanic White men, and the death rate for Black men with prostate cancer is more than double that of men in every other group.
- Since prostate cancer is slow to develop, if it is caught early and actively monitored, men are more likely to have positive outcomes. However, for men who do not have regular and equal access to the healthcare system, it is less likely that their cancers will be detected at an early, more manageable stage.
- Prostate cancer is the most common cancer among men, with 1 in 8 men diagnosed in their lifetime.
- Right now, one man dies every 15 minutes from prostate cancer in the United States. Dr. Alphonse' vision is to end all deaths from prostate cancer by raising awareness.
